Do Traffic Tickets Affect Insurance in Ontario?

People often use “ticket,” “points,” and “insurance impact” as if they mean the same thing. They do not. A ticket is an allegation, points relate to certain convictions, and an insurer applies its own underwriting rules to your policy.

A ticket is not automatically an insurance change

The paper handed to you does not reveal what your insurer will do later. The final result, your driving history, your policy, and the insurer’s rules may all matter. A general percentage quoted online cannot answer that for your policy.

Demerit points and insurance are different

Demerit points are part of the driving-record system. Insurance consequences are determined separately by insurers. A zero-point conviction may still matter to an insurer, while the presence of points does not by itself calculate a premium change.

Novice drivers and camera tickets

G1 and G2 drivers can have additional licensing consequences, so it is important to confirm the current rules that apply to their licence class. Camera-based tickets can involve owner liability rather than identifying a driver; read the notice and seek current guidance for the specific ticket.

Questions worth asking

  • What information does my insurer use when reviewing my policy?
  • Does this ticket type involve a conviction or another record?
  • Are there licence-class considerations that apply to me?
  • Should I speak with a licensed lawyer or paralegal before responding?
Important

No general article can predict an insurance premium. Do not rely on a promised increase, decrease, or result.
